KTM has taken the wraps off the exciting new 990 RC R prototype, set to become its flagship road-homologated sports bike. After phasing out the RC8 in 2015 and shifting focus to naked and adventure motorcycles, the 990 RC R aims to continue the legacy of its predecessor while introducing modern upgrades. Although currently masked in camouflage, the full design of the 990 RC R is yet to be revealed.

KTM has confirmed that the 990 RC R will be powered by a 947cc LC8c parallel twin engine, boasting a claimed output of 128hp and 103Nm. Based on the engine platform used in the current 990 Duke, this powerplant ensures a thrilling riding experience. Along with a steel frame and diecast aluminum subframe, KTM has made enhancements to the chassis for improved weight distribution and stability, especially during acceleration.
The 990 RC R will feature fully adjustable WP Apex open cartridge suspension and cast aluminum wheels paired with Michelin tires. Inspired by MotoGP technology, the addition of aero wings aims to enhance stability during braking and cornering maneuvers. KTM engineers have also prioritized a balance between street and track ergonomics, ensuring rider comfort in both environments.
Following the success of the 1190 RC8 and RC8 R models, KTM’s return to the sports bike segment with the 990 RC R marks a significant milestone. With the competition heating up in the middleweight category, KTM is poised to challenge contenders like the Kawasaki ZX6R, Ducati Panigale V2, Honda CBR600RR, and Yamaha R9.
