From new iPads to Apple AI: Brace Yourself for an Unforgettable Launch Event!

The Apple event scheduled for later today, titled “Let loose” is expected to focus entirely on the iPad. This is not surprising given that the iPad was the only major Apple product line that received no hardware updates in 2023, resulting in declining sales. However, Apple aims to reverse this trend with its lineup on May 7.

One significant detail is that the event will start earlier than usual, with a morning start time across all US time zones, beginning at 7:00 AM PT / 10:00 AM ET. In India, the event is scheduled for 7:30 PM. The event’s duration is expected to be around 35 minutes, which is considerably shorter than typical Apple events but in line with previous ones.

The event will be presented as a pre-recorded video and will be accessible through various streaming sources including YouTube, Apple’s website, and the Apple TV app on any platform.

Interestingly, Apple has provided a hint about the products to be unveiled by featuring artwork with an Apple Pencil on the event invite. This strongly suggests that the event will focus on new iPad models, adding to the anticipation surrounding the event.

Next-generation iPad Pros
Apple is set to introduce the latest iPad Pro models, which has generated a lot of buzz among fans. These new models, which are likely to be available in 12.9-inch and 11-inch sizes, promise significant upgrades rather than an incremental update. Reports indicate that these 2024 versions will boast features that are likely to entice current users to upgrade.

One notable enhancement is the introduction of OLED displays to the iPad lineup for the first time. Both the 12.9-inch and 11-inch iPad Pro models are expected to benefit from this technology, offering improved brightness and contrast. This upgrade aims to bring the display quality of the Pro models in line with the latest advancements.

Additionally, the new iPad Pros are expected to be thinner, a change primarily driven by the adoption of OLED displays and their smaller components. While this may result in less space for the battery, any potential decrease in battery life is expected to be mitigated by the benefits of OLED technology.

Powering these new iPad Pros will be either the M3 or M4 chip, both of which will offer improved performance and ensure the devices remain capable for years to come. Despite the possibility of the chip’s capabilities exceeding current needs, it ensures the iPad remains powerful as software evolves.

In terms of design, the front-facing camera is rumoured to have been relocated to the long side of the iPad, aligning it with landscape orientation for improved video calls, akin to the setup on Mac devices.

Apple is also expected to unveil a range of new accessories tailored for professional use alongside the iPad Pro. However, these enhancements may come at a cost, with reports suggesting a potential price increase of at least $100 for each iPad Pro model.

Next-generation iPad Air
Apple is expanding its iPad Air lineup with the introduction of a 12.9-inch version, marking a significant enhancement for the device. This move mirrors the diverse size options available for the iPad Pro and base-model iPads. Initially rumoured to feature mini-LED display technology like the current iPad Pro, the 12.9-inch iPad Air is now expected to use LCD technology, similar to previous Air models.

In addition to the new form factor, the iPad Air lineup is anticipated to relocate its front-facing camera to the landscape bezel, aligning it with the orientation for improved usability during video calls. The introduction of the M2 chip is also expected to provide a notable speed boost. New colour options may also be introduced.

However, unlike the iPad Pro, the iPad Air may not support the new Magic Keyboard, according to reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Whether the Pencil 3 will be exclusive to the Pro line remains uncertain.

iPad accessories
The upcoming Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro is anticipated to prioritise functionality over form, aiming to cater more to professional users. One significant change expected is the inclusion of an aluminium base, enhancing the device’s laptop-like feel. Moreover, a larger trackpad is likely to be incorporated, addressing concerns about the current model’s smaller size compared to MacBook trackpads.

While there hasn’t been confirmation regarding the addition of function keys, many users hope for their inclusion, considering the keyboard’s focus on the “pro” market.

In tandem with the new keyboard, a third-generation Apple Pencil is set to debut, possibly labelled as the “Pencil Pro.” This iteration may feature magnetically swappable tips, allowing for a more versatile experience, such as different tips for painting, drawing, or calligraphy. Integration with Find My and a squeeze gesture akin to AirPods are also anticipated features, potentially streamlining the purchasing process for users based on device compatibility.

New iPadOS
The beta testing phase for iOS and iPadOS 17.5 is wrapping up, with both updates expected to launch alongside the newly revealed iPads.

In terms of new features, the updates appear to be somewhat limited. One notable change will only affect users in the EU, who will gain the ability to download apps directly from the web.

Additionally, News+ subscribers can look forward to a new game called Quartiles in the News app. Some security improvements are also coming to the Find My feature, along with some minor design adjustments.

It’s possible that Apple may unveil one or two more features related to the new iPad hardware during the event.

Apple AI
During Apple’s recent earnings call, CEO Tim Cook highlighted the company’s continued investments in generative AI and teased upcoming announcements. He mentioned leveraging the powerful neural engines on Apple Silicon and the company’s commitment to privacy as competitive advantages in the AI space.

With the anticipated launch of the next-generation M4 chip, particularly with the iPad Pro 2024, it’s likely that new AI features will be introduced on the upcoming iPad models.

Cook also hinted at “big plans” regarding AI announcements, slated for both the Let Loose event on May 7 and the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 10. This suggests that Apple is gearing up to unveil significant advancements in AI capabilities across its product lineup in the near future.
