India men’s hockey squad for Paris Olympics: Harmanpreet Singh to lead march for gold.

Hockey India has officially unveiled the highly anticipated 16-member Indian Men’s Hockey Team that is set to compete for top honors at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics. The squad, featuring five Olympic debutants, has been undergoing rigorous training and preparation at the SAI Centre in Bengaluru in the lead-up to the prestigious event set to take place from July 26 to August 11.

Leading the charge once again for the Indian team is ace drag-flicker and defender Harmanpreet Singh, who will be participating in his third Olympics. He will be supported by dynamic midfielder Hardik Singh as his deputy. The team also includes seasoned campaigners such as goalkeeper PR Sreejesh and midfielder Manpreet Singh, both making their fourth Olympic appearance.

The defensive line will be anchored by the likes of Jarmanpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas, Sumit, and Sanjay, while the midfield will see the contributions of Raj Kumar Pal, Shamsher Singh, Manpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, and Vivek Sagar Prasad. The forward line is packed with talent, featuring players like Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, Mandeep Singh, and Gurjant Singh.

In a strategic move, goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak, midfielder Nilakanta Sharma, and defender Jugraj Singh have been named as alternate athletes for the squad. Notably, five players – Jarmanpreet Singh, Sanjay, Raj Kumar Pal, Abhishek, and Sukhjeet Singh – will be making their Olympic debut in Paris.

Chief Coach Craig Fulton expressed confidence in the selected squad, highlighting the players’ dedication and commitment throughout the training phase. He emphasized the team’s blend of experience and young talent, which he believes will be instrumental in tackling the challenges ahead and elevating Indian hockey on the global stage.

The team’s goal is clear – to compete with heart, skill, and determination and strive for the highest podium at the Paris 2024 Olympics. India, placed in Pool B alongside formidable opponents like Belgium and Australia, must secure a top-four finish in their pool to advance to the Quarter-Finals.

The Indian Men’s Hockey Team will kick off their campaign against New Zealand on July 27 and will face tough matches against Argentina, Ireland, Belgium, and Australia in the group stage. With a rich Olympic history boasting 12 medals, including 8 Gold, the team, led by Harmanpreet Singh, will be aiming to add another medal to India’s tally in Paris.
