India cricket legend and 1983 World Cup-winning captain, Kapil Dev, has been appointed as the new president of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), as announced on Wednesday. Vice-president Kapil will take over from current president HR Srinivasan after being unanimously chosen.

“It is a great honor to lead PGTI, an organization I have been involved with for many years. It is an association of players, many of whom are my friends and with whom I enjoy playing,” Kapil said about his new role.

Kapil, who once aspired to compete for India at the Asian Games when it was limited to amateurs, continues to devote himself to golf, a sport he has cherished for more than thirty years.

“Golf is now where I dedicate most of my time. Serving as vice-president and being a part of the board, I am grateful to have been selected by the players as their president. I commit to giving my best effort, as always. I am particularly delighted to have more opportunities to spend time with my golfing buddies and play even more,” he stated.

Kapil has been instrumental in securing new sponsors for PGTI and successfully introduced the prestigious Kapil Dev Grant Thornton Invitational at the DLF Golf and Country Club, offering a prize fund of Rs 2 crore.

In recent years, Kapil’s renowned status and passion for golf have taken him to prominent events like the Dunhill Links, sharing the course with international celebrities.

“Golf is an incredible sport. It can be enjoyed at any age and is incredibly calming. Despite my busy schedule with cricket, I find solace on the golf course. I feel fortunate to contribute to the sport of golf and aim to elevate it to new heights,” he added.

India’s top golf stars such as Jeev Milkha Singh, Arjun Atwal, Jyoti Randhawa, Shiv Kapur, and many others are among Kapil’s close friends in the golfing community.

Playing for India from 1978 to 1994, Kapil Dev is considered one of the greatest all-rounders of all time, leading the national team to victory in the 1983 World Cup.

His unforgettable 175 not out in the 1983 World Cup remains one of the finest innings in cricket history. In Test matches, he amassed 5248 runs with eight centuries and also claimed 434 wickets, setting a world record at the time.

The former Indian captain also scored 3783 runs in ODIs and took 253 wickets in the limited-overs format.
