Revving Up the Competition: Liberty Media’s Bold Move to Add MotoGP to Formula 1 Lineup

Liberty Media will acquire 86% of MotoGP business from Dorna Sports with the MotoGP management retaining approximately 14% of their equity.

Liberty Media, the American company that owns Formula 1 racing series, is set to acquire MotoGP, a motorcycle racing series, by the end of this year. The acquisition is valued at €4.2 billion ($4.53 billion) and will see Liberty Media taking on approximately 86% stake in Spain-based Dorna Sports, the company that owns the commercial and television rights for MotoGP.

Despite this acquisition, Dorna Sports will remain independent, with Carmelo Ezpeleta continuing as the series’ chief executive. The deal is aimed at expanding MotoGP’s global reach and appeal, similar to what Liberty Media did for Formula 1 since taking over in 2017.

Under this new ownership, MotoGP can expect further growth and expansion, with plans to increase its presence in the United States and other markets around the world. Liberty Media’s President and CEO, Greg Maffei, expressed excitement about the potential for MotoGP to reach new audiences and grow as a global sporting spectacle.

The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, pending regulatory approvals. Both Liberty Media and Dorna Sports are optimistic about the future prospects and growth opportunities that this partnership will bring to MotoGP and its fans.
