Shabana Azmi joins SS Rajamouli on fresh list of Indian stars invited to join The Academy | Bollywood

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently announced the latest batch of invites for the Class of 2024, welcoming 487 new members. Among them are several notable Indian stars, including acclaimed director SS Rajamouli, veteran actor Shabana Azmi, and award-winning director Rima Das.

The new list of invitees, released on June 25, also includes 71 Oscar nominees, with 19 winners among them. The Indian talents who received invitations to join The Academy include cinematographer Ravi Varman, costume designers Rama Rajamouli and Sheetal Sharma, documentary filmmakers Nisha Pahuja and Hemal Trivedi, producer Ritesh Sidhwani, and choreographer Prem Rakshith.

Shabana Azmi, known for her stellar performances in parallel cinema, has won the National Award for Best Actress a record five times. SS Rajamouli gained international acclaim with his latest film RRR, which secured an Oscar win for Best Original Song for “Naatu Naatu.” Choreographer Prem Rakshith, who worked on the song, is also among the invitees this year.

Hemal Trivedi and Nisha Pahuja are esteemed documentary filmmakers, with Pahuja’s film “To Kill a Tiger” receiving an Academy Award nomination last year. Ritesh Sidhwani, co-founder of Excel Entertainment, has also been recognized by The Academy.

In a joint statement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang expressed their excitement in welcoming the new members, stating that these talented individuals have made a significant impact on the filmmaking community. The official website highlighted that the Class of 2024 is diverse, with 44% identifying as women, 41% from underrepresented ethnic/racial communities, and 56% hailing from 56 countries and territories outside the United States.

Overall, The Academy’s latest invite list reflects a global and inclusive representation of talent in the film industry, showcasing the diversity and excellence of filmmakers and artists from around the world.
