Amazon is reportedly developing a new AI chatbot, known as Metis, to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT. According to a report by Business Insider, Metis will have the capability to handle various generative AI tasks, such as creating text content, responding to queries, and generating images.

Amazon’s AI platform is expected to launch by September of this year, coinciding with the annual Devices and Services event.

The company aims to directly challenge ChatGPT with its in-house AI model named Metis, named after the Greek goddess of wisdom and deep thought. The chatbot will be accessed through a web browser, similar to other popular AI chatbots.

Powered by Amazon’s proprietary AI model, Olympus, Metis is said to be more advanced than the current Titan large language model used in some Amazon products. The chatbot will also feature a multimodal AI model, enabling it to generate both text and images, setting it apart from ChatGPT, which requires a separate subscription to Dall-E for image generation.

One of Metis’ key features will be its use of a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) AI framework, combining text generation with information retrieval from large datasets to improve response quality. Additionally, Metis will be able to access and retrieve information from the internet, providing real-time updates like stock prices, a feature that many AI chatbots struggle with. However, GPT-4-powered ChatGPT and Gemini already offer similar functionality.

The project is led by Amazon’s Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) division, under the leadership of Senior Vice President and Head Scientist Rohit Prasad, with CEO Andy Jassy reportedly playing a significant role in the development of Metis.

If successful, the Metis chatbot could have a significant impact on the AI chatbot market, offering advanced features and functionalities that might attract users seeking a comprehensive AI assistant. With Amazon’s continued innovation in the AI space, the launch of Metis is eagerly anticipated by industry experts and consumers alike.
