Antim and Anshu Win Silver in Budapest

Indian wrestler Antim Panghal made a triumphant return to competitive wrestling after an eight-month break by winning a silver medal at the Ranking Series in Budapest. Despite falling short in the final against Sweden’s Emma Jonna Denise Malmgren, Panghal’s performance demonstrated her resilience and skill on the mat.

Here are some key highlights of Panghal’s journey in the Budapest competition:

1. Antim Panghal, the reigning European champion, showcased her attacking prowess by taking an early 3-0 lead in the first period of the final match.

2. Panghal’s return to wrestling holds significance for India’s Olympic hopes, especially after she had to miss the Asian Championships due to a back injury earlier in the year.

3. The 19-year-old wrestler displayed dominance in her opening match against Uzbekistan’s Sakibjamal Esbosynova, securing a comfortable 10-0 victory.

4. Panghal’s semi-final bout against Polish wrestler Katarzyna Krawczyk was a tough challenge, but her tactical awareness and speed helped her secure a crucial two-point throw for victory.

5. This Budapest competition marked only the second appearance by Panghal in the Ranking Series, following her gold medal win in Tunis in July 2022.

In addition to Panghal’s success, Indian wrestler Anshu Malik also showcased her talent by reaching the final in the 57kg category. Despite facing a tough opponent in China’s Kexin Hong, Malik’s journey to the final was impressive, including a hard-fought victory over Moldova’s world champion Anastasia Nichita.

While Vinesh Phogat couldn’t advance beyond the quarter-finals, her dominating performance in the first round against Colombia’s Alisson Camila Cardozo Rey highlighted her skill and determination on the mat.

The Indian wrestlers’ performances in Budapest not only reflect their talent and dedication but also serve as a promising sign for India’s prospects in the upcoming Paris Olympics. With less than 50 days to go for the games, Antim Panghal, Anshu Malik, and Vinesh Phogat have shown that they are ready to compete at the highest level.
