Hyundai Exter: Mileage, Price, Specs, Features

The Hyundai Exter is a compact SUV from Hyundai that competes with the Tata Punch and Citroen C3 in the market. It is powered by an 83hp, 1.2-litre petrol engine that delivers a claimed combined fuel efficiency of 19.4kpl. However, in our real-world tests, we found that the manual transmission version of the Exter returned 9.21kpl in the city and 14.77kpl on the highway, with a combined efficiency of 11.99kpl.

The Exter comes with fuel-saving auto start/stop technology, but in our tests, we observed that the system did not engage as frequently due to high ambient temperatures, impacting the overall fuel efficiency. Compared to the Grand i10 Nios, the Exter is slightly heavier and has different gearing, which affects its performance on the road. On the highway, the engine spins at around 2,900rpm in fifth gear at 100kph.

At Autocar India, we conduct thorough fuel efficiency testing by driving the test cars in fixed city and highway loops, maintaining average speeds, and using the air conditioning and other electrical systems as a regular user would. We ensure consistency by swapping drivers periodically and calculate efficiency by refilling the tanks after each cycle.

Overall, the Hyundai Exter offers decent fuel efficiency for its segment, but it is important to consider real-world testing results to get a true picture of its performance on the road.
