Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar truly represents the evolving roles of women in cinema. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s expertise in creating impactful characters is evident in Heeramandi. The power of Bhansali’s storytelling lies not only in the visually stunning settings and feasts he creates, but also in the depth of his characters that shine through.

From Mallikajaan, Fareedan, Bibbojaan, Waheeda, to Lajjo and Alamzeb, the characters in the story are the backbone of the narrative. By shedding light on the lives of courtesans in pre-colonial India, the series explores the untold experiences of women. Bhansali’s meticulous attention to detail breathes life into these stories of love, betrayal, and resilience.

Monika Shergill, VP – Content, Netflix India, states, “We aim to showcase diverse lives through storytelling and have always promoted narratives centered on strong female characters. Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar perfectly embodies this ethos.”

Heeramandi has been dubbed in 13 languages, including eight foreign languages. This marks the first time an Indian Netflix series will be dubbed in French, German, Malay, Thai, and Arabic. By dubbing Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar in various languages, we aim to elevate our Indian creators on a global platform and provide audiences in India and worldwide with the opportunity to experience this grand spectacle in their preferred language.

Discussing the decision to dub Heeramandi in multiple languages, Monika Shergill explains, “Our choice to dub Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar in various languages demonstrates our commitment to making exceptional stories accessible globally. While our stories are initially crafted with a specific audience in mind, we also acknowledge their potential for international appeal. Voice-over artist Arushi Talwar shares, “My directive was to deliver clean English without any accent, tailored to match the character’s style and personality that I was voicing for.”

Artist Virlal Shah adds, “I was instructed to avoid sounding exaggerated or overly feminine. The English had to maintain a neutral tone reflective of the pre-independence era in India. I was encouraged to envision my character Ustaad akin to Naarad Muni and infuse a sense of enjoyment.”
