Apple’s groundbreaking announcement of Apple Intelligence and its integration with ChatGPT across its platforms has set the tech world abuzz. However, the tech giant seems to have even more ambitious AI plans in the pipeline.

In a revealing moment during a post-keynote session, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, hinted at the potential inclusion of Google’s Gemini AI model in the future.

Discussing Apple’s vision for third-party AI integration, Federighi underscored the company’s commitment to offering users more choices.

After citing ChatGPT as a prime example, he suggested that Apple might explore domain-specific AI models, saying, “We want to enable users ultimately to choose the models they want, maybe Google Gemini in the future. Nothing to announce right now.” This statement indicates Apple’s openness to partnerships beyond ChatGPT, recognizing the value in Google’s versatile AI technology.

Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence marks a significant leap forward for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users. This new personal intelligence system seamlessly merges the power of generative AI with personal context, providing highly relevant and useful intelligence.

Integrated deeply into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, Apple Intelligence leverages the capabilities of Apple silicon to understand and generate language and images, streamline tasks across various apps, and simplify daily routines by drawing from personal context.

“We’re thrilled to introduce a new chapter in Apple innovation. Apple Intelligence will transform what users can do with our products — and what our products can do for our users,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.

Cook went on to explaining how Apple’s unique approach combines generative AI with a user’s personal context to deliver “truly helpful intelligence”. “And it can access that information in a completely private and secure way to help users do the things that matter most to them,” he added.

“This is AI as only Apple can deliver it, and we can’t wait for users to experience what it can do” Cook added.

Apple’s GenAI features

Apple Intelligence introduces an array of new systemwide Writing Tools embedded in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. These tools enable users to rewrite, proofread, and summarize text seamlessly across various apps, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party applications. Whether it’s refining class notes, perfecting a blog post, or crafting an email, these Writing Tools aim to bolster users’ confidence in their writing abilities.

Another exciting feature, Image Playground, powered by Apple Intelligence, allows users to create compelling images within seconds, offering styles such as Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. This feature integrates effortlessly into apps like Messages, providing personalized concept suggestions based on conversations.

Siri receives a major upgrade with Apple Intelligence, becoming more integrated into the overall system experience. Enhanced language understanding capabilities allow for a more natural, contextually relevant, and personalized interaction. Siri can now better handle speech stumbles, maintain context across multiple requests, and accept typed input, making it more user-friendly and efficient.

Apple Intelligence places a strong emphasis on user privacy. Many AI models operate entirely on the device itself, ensuring data security. For more complex requests, Private Cloud Compute extends Apple’s rigorous privacy and security standards to the cloud.

Apple Intelligence will be available in beta as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year in US English. This rollout promises to bring a new level of personal intelligence and AI-driven functionality to Apple users, making everyday tasks more intuitive and efficient.
